How to Ensure a Quality Window Film
1. Manufacturer – Some window films are made to a price point, whilst others use the highest quality ingredients for each part of the film’s construction. We have used most brands of film over the years, but only have full confidence in a couple of brands.
2. Warranty –
- Ensure that the warranty is in writing from the MANUFACTURER. That way if the installer is no longer around in the future, you still have a warranty.
- Check that the warranty is honoured in Australia.
- Dont just check how long the warranty is for, check what it covers as it can be vastly different between brands. Most film brands provide warranty coverage for peeling, bubbling, cracking, crazing, de-laminating & de-metalisation…….. But very few film brands have warranty coverage for fading and colour change, or loss of performance. These are two very common failures of lower quality films.
3. Adhesive – All things being equal, Dry/Water-Activated Adhesive is the longest lasting for the flat glass on your home or office. The other type of adhesive is Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PS Adhesive). The best quality PS Adhesive films do not tend to last as long as the best quality Dry/Water Activated Adhesive films. However, sometimes the glass type can require the use of a PS Adhesive film. Either way, we only use and recommend film brands that use the very best quality adhesives that are available.
4. UV Filters – Always ask and make sure that the UV filters are in both the adhesive and the first layer of film. UV filters in the film itself last much longer than UV filters in the adhesive alone. This will ensure your family and furnishings are always protected.
5. No Dye – The colour of the film should be from the metal or ceramic layers in the film, not a dye. If the film has dye in it, even if it is said to be “colour-fast” or “non-fading”, it will fade over time to purple, then blue, then clear. No dye = no fading. And check the warranty, if the film is not warranted against fading then it will likely fade and the film manufacturer knows it – that is why they don’t provide cover for it in their warranty.
